The Definition of bass
"Bass is a role in all music that holds great responsibility. In its most fundamental form, it is a bridge between rhythm and melodies. This is the definition of groove - rythmic time holding while keeping that rhythm within reasonable restraints of the key signature or modal patterns. No matter the genre, this dogma of writing, playing, and perfecting the bass in music has never failed me. Too often is the bass overlooked in music and by hiring me, you will hear this definition come to life in your music. Your vision for your music is very important. If there is something you KNOW you want and want it done professionally, you can be as direct and specific as you like with me. But, if you are unsure what it is exactly you want the bass in your music to be, I will come up with ideas and samples until you are finally satisfied - I am always open to discussion and criticism so long as it leads to your satisfaction. You will not find difficulty here."
ABOUT JON:
Jon Kal was born in Youngstown Ohio, USA, in 1990. When he was 4, Jon and his family moved to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, where he grew up and currently resides. He received his first musical training when he was six in the form of keyboard lessons and music theory classes, but his lack
of interest was obvious and he was not forced to continue. Instead, he spent his childhood simply exploring the natural beauty of Canada and playing hockey.
It was in his early teens that Jon really rediscovered music. He enjoyed listening to various heavy metal groups such as Slipknot, Korn, Megadeth, and Death. By the age of thirteen, Jon knew he wanted to express himself through music. He felt more of a personal connection with the smooth, subtle
electric bass influence he heard in his favorite bands. He felt this instrument was a perfect fit for him and the way he was meant to express music. Although he only took bass lessons for three months at the beginning of his journey, he diligently continued to study independently. He practiced every day, often for hours; he learned technique and musical theory on his own. He even acquired up to the advanced rudiments of the Royal Conservatory of music with some expert aid and the use of the Mark Sarnecki books. Throughout the rest of his teens, he honed his bass playing skills and songwriting abilities by composing and performing a variety of music with bands. These experiences refined not only his playing skills, but also his performing abilities.
Today, Jon prides as a session bassist. He spends at least 4 hours a day practicing technique, robustness, and perfecting a unique tone. He takes his inspiration as a bassist from many modern and timeless bassists; David Pastorius, Joe Bouchard, Fieldy, Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius, Bobby Vega,
Ida Nielsen, and Steve Harris to name a few. Aside from his technique, robustness, and tone, Jon also experiments daily with many modern ways of recording, editing, and mixing his bass lines. He has been experimenting for the last 3 years with a variety of DAW's, plug-ins, audio interfaces, etc. and has recently come to a plateau where he feels comfortable to record and fit himself into a variety of musical styles.
